Linden blossom has a long history in European culture, cuisine and herbalism. Its flowers were collected in full bloom and dried for use in herbal infusions, homemade syrups and aromatic herbal blends. Linden blossom was also an important nectar-producing tree, while its wood was traditionally used for carving.
In traditional herbal practices, Linden blossom infusion was primarily associated with the colder months, the common cold and quiet moments before rest. The European Medicines Agency lists whole dried Linden blossom flower clusters as an ingredient in certain traditional herbal medicinal products used to relieve symptoms of the common cold and mild symptoms of mental stress.
Linden blossom flower clusters naturally contain mucilaginous polysaccharides, flavonoids, phenolic acids, tannins and small amounts of aromatic essential oil. The flavonoids studied include compounds derived from quercetin and kaempferol, including tiliroside. The proportions of tannins and mucilaginous substances also contribute to the resulting flavour and character of the prepared infusion.
