Calendula has a long history of cultivation in the Mediterranean region and other parts of Europe. Its richly coloured flowers were used in traditional herbalism, cosmetic products and cooking. They were added to herbal blends, salads, rice dishes and soups, and were also used as a natural colourful garnish for food.
The traditional use of Calendula was primarily associated with caring for the skin and mucous membranes.
Calendula flowers naturally contain several groups of plant compounds, including flavonoids, triterpenes, phenolic acids and carotenoids. Carotenoids contribute to their characteristic yellow to orange colour. The levels of individual compounds may vary depending on the variety, growing conditions, harvest period and processing method.
Laboratory and preclinical studies examine the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of Calendula extracts, as well as mechanisms associated with tissue repair.

Calendula produces branching stems with elongated green leaves and striking yellow to orange flower heads. It blooms throughout much of the growing season, and its flowers also attract pollinators. In loose-leaf teas, it enhances the appearance of the blend and complements the other plants with a delicate herbal note.
