You can prepare your chosen tea as a hot infusion or, if recommended for the individual product, enjoy it chilled as a refreshing herbal drink. Follow the instructions on the packaging regarding the amount of tea, water temperature and brewing time.
Black chokeberry originates from North America, where its fruits were consumed as food and added to traditional beverages. After the plant was introduced to Europe, it became widely used in the production of juices, syrups, jams, fruit teas and other processed products. Its traditional and culinary uses are therefore documented primarily for the fruit.
Black chokeberry leaves are a lesser-known part of the plant, but they are also used to prepare herbal infusions. Scientific interest in the leaves is mainly associated with their natural phenolic compound content. Analyses have identified chlorogenic acids, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins and other plant compounds in the leaves. Their levels may vary depending on the harvest period, leaf maturity and processing method.
Laboratory studies primarily examine the antioxidant activity of the leaves and how their extracts behave in various cellular and chemical models. Researchers also investigate mechanisms associated with inflammatory responses and the activity of selected compounds against microorganisms. Water extracts prepared from dried leaves, a form more closely resembling a tea infusion, have also been studied separately.
Most of these findings, however, come from laboratory measurements, cellular models or studies of concentrated extracts. They contribute to a better understanding of the plant’s composition and properties.

Black chokeberry is a shrub known for its dark fruits and leaves, which develop vibrant colours in autumn. Although its fruits are the part most commonly processed in food production, the dried leaves can also be used in herbal blends. They complement other plants with a subtle herbal character and slightly astringent flavour.
